About This Game POLYBIUS is a fast, trippy tunnel shooter playable on a normal screen or in VR for the best effect. It features 50 levels of blissful trance shooting action set to a blistering soundtrack. The PS4 version was EDGE Magazine's VR GOTY in 2017, and the PC version of the game was even used as the basis for a NIN music video. So put on your trance trousers, bust out the Oculus if you have one, and strap in for a euphoric ride.Blast, boost and fly through 50 geometrical environments. Hit the boost gates to increase your speed. How fast dare you go? More speed means more points but also more danger!Pick up powerup pills along the way to increase your firepower, become invincible, launch yourself to stratospheric speeds, even slow down time.POLYBIUS is designed to bring you quickly to a euphoric flow state, and to keep you there the whole time you are playing. There are no bosses to spike your progress, and the game will never make you redo sections - progress made is progress kept, always, even if you lose a life. We want you to come out of every game of Polybius, whether or not you've beaten your highscore, smiling and happy because you've enjoyed the act of playing so much.Drop in for a quick blast or settle in for a long trip with Llamasoft's tried and true arcade game modes: Pure (start from the beginning and see how far you can get), Endurance (start from the beginning with a fixed number of lives, no extras are awarded during Endurance games), or Normal.In a Normal Mode game, you can choose to restart from any level you have previously arrived at. Our Restart Best system starts you off with the best-ever lives and score that you've had at that point in any game previously. Over time you can dip in and improve the individual Restart Best stats for any of the levels and gradually build a platform for achieving better and better high scores.The inspiration for POLYBIUS was an old urban legend about a strange, abstract, psychedelic arcade game that was supposedly released for a brief time in the 1980s. According to the legend people who played the game experienced strange and rather unpleasant psychological reactions after becoming addicted to it. There was talk of the CIA and Men in Black. Of course the legendary game has never actually been found but - especially with the advent of VR - we thought it might be fun to make a game inspired by the old legend. Such simple and compulsive gameplay. Totally immersive in 2D - I haven't got an Oculus headset - its a finely tuned audiovisual experience that tugs at your senses, while also lulling you into a trance like uber-state of feeling the force. Rushing you headlong into bizarre abstract environments that seem to stretch endlessly before you.I love the way it gently slips you in at the shallow end encouraging exploration of each level and its diverse elements. You soon discover what makes good things happen and what does not.The important things to remember while playing are "go faster" "shoot ahead of you to see what can be blasted clear" and "come back and try it faster if you fail" - once you know the way high speed rewards you with points but also makes the jumps and smashes that fail at slow velocity possible. This is important to learn to progress at all through certain levels, it is also very exhilarating.This is not to say that you don't work hard at it. Not all the games mechanics are obvious, power-ups are still a bit of a mystery to me, it might write a flash of text across the screen what has just happened but you are concentrating so hard you can't look away from the action. Also some of the text is welcome encouragement rather than informative. I still love it though for its idiosyncracies - an obsession with Basingstoke in Hampshire being one. Level 3 starts with the words, "Imagine yourself on the outer surface of some kind of tube." and sure enough your little space ship is gliding along the outside of a blue chequer patterned tube that is rushing out of the screen. Great use of understatement throughout which just highlights the mind bending quality of the graphics.After loading this up in Steam for the first time I played for about three hours, with a few short breaks, and it felt like no time at all - so beware! To their credit the developers have put in suggestions of other things you might do to relax between levels. If you are feeling tired have a break, the game isn't going away. I don't know why more people aren't into this. Maybe its an age thing, I must be about the same age as Jeff Minter and for some reason I want to have the game experiences he wants to have.I think that the experience of playing - the "game reality" of abstract games, like this and Tempest and other old school genres that don't attempt real world realism, is far more REAL than the game reality of those that do. The reality of this game is unfiltered. At no point do you notice any flaws because there is no other reality apart from the game. Stop playing and reality feels like a glitch.When you play Polybius it overwhelms you because you are concentrating so hard. It seems to flood into your peripheral vision as well, like living in a wide angle lens - play it on a big screen with the sound cranked up!Did I mention that the sound effects are wild too! And the music playing behind it all seems just perfect. Go and play it now!If this does not sound like your cup of tea then you'll probably enjoy something else better. If on the other hand you love peeping over an abyss or lying on your back staring into the galaxy then this game is the best.. Don't judge this game from 2D videos, it has to be experienced in VR - and the game was made especially for VR, not for 2D (although it works in 2D too). Note that the PS4 VR (PSVR) version of Polybius is performing at 120 fps - that means you can easily crank up super sampling to for example 2.0 using Oculus Tray Tool, because Polybius still performs at 90 fps on the Rift (at least on my GTX 1080, but I think same thing should work flawlessly on a GTX 1060). High levels of super sampling provide increased sharpness and depth, and advantages of increased depth are not to be underestimated in Polybius due to the game's blazing speed. When starting the game in SteamVR you get a warning that this game runs outside of SteamVR and that you're now leaving SteamVR - that was awesome, and therefore you need to use for example Oculus Tray Tool to control super sampling instead of SteamVR. Personally I probably wouldn't object if someone argued that Polybius is the Rift Game of the Year 2018. - Polybius is pure VR art.The music in Polybius is beyond awesome, easily worth $30 on it's own: let's just pretend you get the game for free while paying for the music ;-)Polybius is simply Jeff Minter's masterpiece. I think Polybius and Minotaur Arcade Volume 1 are like having the old ZX Spectrum game developers set completely free. It's nearly 40 years since Minter made his first game, experiencing Polybius and Gridrunner in VR is - perhaps - like seeing dreams come true.. Ever since playing revenge of the mutant camels on C64 I love the frantic colorful worlds that Jeff Minter creates, and this one takes it to a new level with VR. Moolicious!!. So glad this came out on steam, I prefer the desktop system to the consoles, I hope we can see more of the PS4 console VR games come out for PC. Glad to support the indie developer. The game does have that retro feel I was looking for from my old days in the arcade playing tempest or playing tempest 2000 on the atari Jaguar.. Fantastic game, Minter's finest work. One of the trippiest experiences I've ever had, fantastic soundtrack, smooth gameplay, the works.Recommended regardless of whether you have VR.
